An English singer and song writer, Jorja Alice Smith was born on 11th June, 1997 in Walsall, West Midlands, UK. Her mother, a jewelry designer, is English and her father, Peter, a former musician, is a Jamaican. Jorja’s father, who was himself a part of “2nd Naicha”, a neo-soul group when he was younger, encouraged Jorja to start learning piano and performing when she was only 8. She had also regular trips to London in order to work with Ed Thomas and Maverick Sabre in songwriting sessions. All along, she continued writing songs, which she always wanted them to target social issues.
She believes that there are a lot of important issues that should be considered by musicians, because these are the songs and music that are listened by millions of people. Her hometown, Walsall, is one of those places she always cared for, a run-down place which she believes have a lot of creative people, but without sufficient possibilities for all. She has also revealed that one of her earliest songs was “High Street”; the song was about the economic recession of the late 00s, when all stores in her hometown, Walsall, were closed and the town seemed like a ghost town.
