The famous American actress, model, and dancer Zoë Yadira Saldaña Nazario, mostly known as Zoe Saldana, was born on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey, U.S. She had her first performance in front of the camera in 1999 in an episode of the series Law & Order. Since then, she has acted in more than 50 movies and TV series. Zoe is mostly known for her acting in Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Trek. She has modeled for a Calvin Klein’s commercial. She has also been featured in magazines such as Latina, Vanity Fair, and Elle.

 

Early Years

Zoe was born to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother, with also Lebanese and Haitian ethnicity. Most of her childhood years were spent in Jackson Heights, New York. Zoe is bilingual, being able to speak both English and Spanish from her early childhood. She lost her father when she was only 9. Her mother, then, moved back to the Dominican Republic with Zoe and Zoe’s two sisters, named Cisely and Mariel.

In the Dominican Republic, Zoe grew a passion for dancing and therefore attended the ECOS Espacio de Danza Academy. In the Academy, she studied different types of dancing; but she enjoyed ballet the most. However, she did not find herself ambitious enough to make the sacrifices a ballet dancer should make. At the age of 17, she joined the Faces theater group in Brooklyn, a theatrical group with plays related to teenage problems including substance abuse and adolescent sexuality. Meanwhile, a talent agency saw her acting in the production of a play and recruited her.

 

Zoe’s Early Years of Acting

Her previous acting experiences, as well as years of dancing ballet, helped her achieve her first movie role in Center Stage (2000) as a talented ballet student. In 2002, she co-acted with Britney Spears in a movie named Crossroads. The movie was considered a hit in the box office, yet not a success according to the movie critics. Zoe’s Success Follow Up

The following year after rising to incredible fame was a busy one for Zoe. In 2010, she acted in five movies: the comedy Death at a Funeral, two action movies of The Losers and Takers, the comedy Burning Palms, and the short comedy Idiots. In the movie The Losers, she acted as Aisha al-Fadhil, a native Bolivian woman, for which she had to gain weight and also carry heavy weapons with herself eight hours a day.
